Answer:

The Marathas had a humble origin.

Till the early seventeenth century, they were minor chieftains serving in the Kingdoms of Ahmednagar, Bijapur and Golconda.

When these kingdoms became weak, the Marathas declared themselves independent.

It was Shivaji who carved out a powerful Kingdom in the Konkan region.

Shivaji was followed by weak successors.

In the eighteenth century, power passed into the hands of the peshwas.

It was under them that the marathas became the dominant regional power.

From 1713 to 1761, the peshwas controlled the Maratha Empire.
