Answer:

Marco Polo is a celebrated Merchant and traveller, known for his famous travels through the Asian States via the silk route.

Explanation:

Born to a merchant family in Venice, in 1254, Marco Polo got trained to be a merchant from a very young age. He had the influence of his father Niccolo Polo and his uncle Maffeo Polo in both trade and travel. It was with them he initially reached China in 1269, where he was offered a place as the foreign emissary of emperor Kublai Khan.

His travels throughout Southeast Asia, covering Japan, China, Burma, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Vietnam etc., were as the foreign emissary official of Kublai Khan. He spent a long 24 years in Southeast Asia and returned to Venice in 1293 where he got married, had children and lived till his death in 1324.

Unlike other European travellers who had visited Asia before, he wrote about his journey and made a detailed account of Southeast Asia. "Book of the Marvels of the World ", also known as "The Travels of Marco Polo", was first published around 1300. It was this text which first mentioned Asian geography, culture, flora and fauna, and many authentic innovations such as gunpowder, paper currency,  Porcelain etc. This inspired many travelers to set out for Asia including Christopher Columbus.
