A meristem is the tissue in most plants containing undifferentiated cells (meristematic cells), found in zones of the plant where growth can take place. Meristematic cells give rise to various organs of the plant and keep the plant growing.

Meristematic tissues:
Consist of actively-dividing cells. Meristematic tissue are of three type:-
-Apical meristem: present at the growing tips of stems and roots.
(Function: to increase the length of stems and roots.)
-Intercalary meristem: present at the base of leaves or internodes.
(Function:for the longitudinal growth of plants.)
-Lateral meristem: present on the lateral sides of the stems and roots.
(Function:to increase the thickness of stems and roots.)
