In this party system, more than two political parties contest election to gain power. In India there is a multiparty system with more than 750 parties registered by the election commission. But only a few parties are in race to the election amd form the government. This system often appears very complex and leads to political instability. It also allows a variety of interests and opinions to enjoy political representation

If several parties compete to power and more than two parties have reasonable chance of coming to power either on thier own strength or alliance with other we call it as multi party

India has evolved a multi party system it is because the social and geographical diversity in such a large country is not easily absorbed by two or even three parties

Party system is not something any country can choose it evolves over a long time depending on the nature of society its social and regional divisions its history of politics and its system of elections
