Nagodas were the sericulturists in Bengal who used to produce Silk. While Bengal was ruled by the English East India Company, the officials began manipulating the Nagodas. They were obliged to weave for little wages and were made the company's bonded labourers, denying a chance to seek out any other means of living.The Nagodas were forced to weave for the British company, however, received lower wages in return. They were treated like slaves and worked for survival.

A turning point came when they protested against the policies of the British and their company by cutting off their thumb and denying to work for them further.
