Answer:

Nervous tissue is the main part of the nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. These control the body functions. It is made up of neurons, which transmit impulses, and the neuroglia cells. Neuroglia cells help and provide food for the neurons .A neuron is the longest cell of our body.

NERVOUS TISSUE :

General properties :

  • It is a compound tissue and is formed of four types of cells, out of which neurons are the most important type of cells.
  • It forms the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
  • These have the power of excitation and conduction of nerve impulses.

Composition:

It is formed of four types of cells:

(a) Neurons or nerve cells (see Fig.):

  • A neuron is the longest cell of the body (about 1 meter) and is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
  • It is the communication unit of the nervous system as it can receive and conduct nerve impulses to various parts of the body.
  • It has two parts: (1) Cyton or cell body and (ii) Nerve processes.

(i) Cyton or cell body :

  • It is the nucleated part of a neuron whose granular cytoplasm is called neuroplasm and has fine threads called neurofibrils (for conduction of nerve impulses) and RER-rich Nissl's granules (for protein synthesis).

(ii) Nerve processes:

  • These are protoplasmic processes arising from the cyton and are of two types - Axon and Dendron
  • Axon conducts nerve impulses from the cyton, and Dendron conducts the nerve impulses towards the cyton.

(b) Neuroglia:

  • These are non-nervous, irregular cells between the neurons in the brain, spinal cord, ganglia, and eye retina.
  • It acts as packing cells between the neurons.
  • It also provides nutrition to the neurons and also acts as phagocytes.

(c) Neuro-secretory cells of the brain secrete neurohormones.

(d) Ependymal cells are ciliated cuboidal cells that line the brain and spinal cord cavities and move the cerebrospinal fluid in their cavities.

Function of Neuron:

Neurons of the nervous system coordinate the sense organs and muscles of the body by conduction of nerve impulses for rapid responses to stimuli.
