NHRC stands for 'National Human Rights Commission'

EXPLANATION:

The NHRC was constituted on 12th October in the year 1993 under the 'Protection of Human Rights Ordinance', 28th September in the year 1993. NHRC is in charge of protecting and promoting human rights in India. Some of the key functions of NHRC are

  • Pro-actively or re-actively investigating 'violations of human rights' or 'negligence in the avoidance of such violations by any public servant'  
  • Intervening in any court proceeding pertaining to human rights  
  • Making suggestions as regards giving relief to the victims and their families.  
  • Reviewing safeguards given under or by the 'Constitution or any other law' in force for the safeguarding of human rights and propose measures for their effectual execution  
  • Reviewing factors, comprising acts of terrorism which impede the enjoyment of human rights and suggest proper remedial measures  
  • Studying treaties and other global instruments on human rights and give suggestions for their effectual implementation  
  • Carry out and support research in the domain of human rights  
  • Involve in education of human rights amongst different sections of society and promote awareness of protections available for the safeguarding of these rights via publications, seminars, the media and other available methods  
  • Encouraging efforts of NGOs and institutions working in the arena of human rights.  
  • Considering the requirements for the safeguard of human rights.  
  • Requesting any public copy or record from any office or court.
