Oxidation- Reaction in which atom of oxygen is added or atom of hydrogen is reduced.
Reduction- Reaction in which atom of oxygen is reduced or atom of hydrogen is added.

Explanation:

An oxidizing agent is the compound/element which has oxygen/Hydrogen in the reactant side. For example-  CuO+HCl------>CuCl2+H2O. Here CuO initially had oxygen but after reaction it loses so it is a reduction reaction, BUT as it had oxygen earlier it is said to be the oxidizing agent and HCl is called the reducing agent.
