Lord Cornwallis (1738 - 1805) was responsible for Europeanisation of the police force during his administration.
Police
were controlled by the local Zamindars until then. Lord Cornwallis took away
this power from the Zamindars and appointed inspectors at the ‘Thana’ levels (districts
were divided into thanas). These inspectors were controlled by the Superintendent
of Police who were appointed at district levels. He revised their salaries
which were low earlier and gave them sweeping powers to maintain law and order.
