In 1868, Mahadeo Govind Ranade founded Prarthana Samaj at Bombay (now Mumbai) .Govind Ranade was a social reformer emphasised the education of women, widow remarriage and abolition of the Purdah system .

Mahadeo Govind Ranade belonged an orthodox Brahmin family he was born in Niphad and spent much of his childhood in Kolhapur where his father was a minister. He married Ramabai Ranade, whom he subsequently provided with an education . The couple had no children. After his death, she continued his social and educational reform work.
