Puberty is defined as the process of physical changes by which adolescents reach sexual maturity, that is, become capable of reproduction.

i) It normally occurs between 12 - 14 years in boys and 10 - 14 years in girls

ii) Puberty ends with the adolescent reaching reproductive maturity

iii) This period may vary from person to person

iv) At the onset of puberty, several physical changes occur

v) They are referred to as Secondary Sexual Characteristics

vi) Physical changes include:

  • Increase in hight
  • Change in body shape
  • Change in voice
  • Development of body hair
  • Emotional changes
  • Increased activity of sweat glands
