Rearing or the breeding and management of silkworms for the production of silk is called as Sericulture.
Rearing Of Silk worm:
1.Silk is produced by a moth called as Silk Moth. The scientific name for silk producing moth is Bombyx Mori.
2. The silk worm moth lays tiny eggs.
3. These hatch into small larvae or caterpillars.
4. The larvaes are fed on mulberry leaves for about six weeks.
5. During this period they grow in size and they are ready to enter next stage called as pupa.
6. Pupa holds itself by weaving a net around its body by swinging its head from side to side in the form of eight.
7. While swinging its head, it secretes a wet sticky substance .
8. This susbtance is made up of protein which hardens on exposure to air and becomes silk fibre. soon, the pupa is covered by silk fibres. This covering is called as Cocoon.
9. The pupa continues to grow inside the cocoon. Once the cocoon is spun, the pupa turn into adult moth.
10. After the complete development of silk worm, the cocoons are gathered and kept under sun or boiled or exposed to steam. Boiling releases silk fibre from cocoon.
11. The silk fibre from many cocoons are brought to form a single silk thread. to make different  kinds of silk fabrics like silk sarees etc. This process is called Reeling of silk.
