In India, South-west winds bring in Monsoon season which lasts from June to September. During September, winds from North-east direction start gaining strength and tries to push out South-west monsoon wind. Due to this, it creates thunder storms while monsoon is about to withdraw which is called retreating monsoon.

During the months of October-November, the south-west monsoon winds become weaker and start to retreat from the skies of North India. This phase of the monsoon is known as the retreating monsoon.
