Rib cage consists of 12 pairs of ribs, sternum, xiphoid process, costal cartilages and 12 thoracic vertebrae. It protects heart, lungs and diaphragm. It provides a framework on which the muscles of the shoulder girdle, chest, upper abdomen and back can attach. It also plays important role in the respiration.

Rib cage acts a barrier of lungs. It protects the lungs from damage. There are 24 ribs or 12 pairs of ribs,out of which 7 ribs are true ribs which are attached directly to the sternum, 8 - 12 ribs are false ribs which are not attached directly to the sternum and the last two pairs of false ribs, 11 th and 12 th ribs are floating ribs.
