The line ‘riches and joys are nothing but baits' have been taken from the short story The Rattrap penned by Selma Lagerlof.

The line as well the title of the story Rattrap is used by the author cleverly as a metaphor referring to the world mechanics, like how rats though inherently clever still take the baits and get caught, the same way humans though inherently good and kind by nature become greedy for the materialistic benefits and thus bring about their downfall.

But, there is hope for them to learn from their mistakes.
