The pressure developed in roots due to continued inward movement of water through cell to cell osmosis which helps in ascent of cell sap upward through the stem.

Root pressure is the continuous inflow of water that develops pressure in the roots and pushes the sap upwards through the stem into the leaves. In the xylem, water moves upwards through the xylem vessels because of root pressure and the pressure or pull created by transpiration.
