1. Then rowlatt act was passed in 1919 through the imperial legislature, despite the United Indian opposition.
2.This gave tremendous power to the British authorities, since they could repress any political activity, and could detain any political prisoner for 2 years without any notice.
3. Gandhiji decided to carry out a nation wide satyagrah against this rowlatt act, for which a strike was organised on 6th April 1919.
4. Fearing that the communication systems of the British would shut down such as telegrams, posts, railways etc, the British calmed down on all nationalists and barred Gandhi from entering Delhi.
5. 10th April 1919, the police fired upon a peaceful procession, which led to attacks on government buildings and riots in Amritsar. Thus from here, the martial law was imposed and general Dyer took over.
Rowlatt act was to arrest any Indian without any warrant.the implications were even on:
