Diwali, the lights festival brings pleasure, peace and happiness. Youth and children look to the festival with excitement. In reality, well before the festival, they start to explode and to play with fireworks. Sadly, while Diwali literally and figuratively illuminates our lives, lighting firecrackers could pose a number of medical dangers and encourage a few mishaps along the way. And that's where we all need to be a little vigilant to make sure we have a safe and pleasant Diwali. Children appear to be especially vulnerable to the possibility of mishaps in Diwali because they are most fond of lighting firecrackers. Even adults might have some caution and attention, however.

• Do not light firecrackers in hand, or in empty pipes or closed tins.  
• Light firecrackers in open spaces.  
• Ensure you keep a bucket of water handy while lighting firecrackers.  
• Keep inhalers, burn treatment creams, and eye drops handy
• Do not light fireworks near combustible materials such as dry grass, trees, buildings, and other impediments
• Try lighting noiseless crackers if you can. They are just as enjoyable and a delight to the eyes.  
• Use khadi or cotton clothing while lighting firecrackers.
