sclerenchyma (scleros means hard and enchyma means to fill) it is consists of thick walled dead cells with a narrow lumen the secondary cellwall is formed due to of lignin which makes the cell wall even harder the sclerenchyma occurs inside xylem and phloem .
there are various functions of sclerenchyma
it provides mechanical support and strength to the plants (b) it forms a protective covering over seeds and nuts (c) some sclerenchyma fibres are even commercially exploited e.g. flax jute hemp etc.
