Selective permeability is a property of cellular membranes that only allows certain molecules to enter or exit the cell. This is important for the cell to maintain its internal order irrespective of the changes to the environment. For example, water, ions, glucose and carbon dioxide may need to be imported or exported from the cell depending on its metabolic activity.

Here is the required answer :

•Selective permeability implies that it allows only certain molecules to enter or exit ie pass through it.
•It is the property of membranes , especially the plasma membrane , which allows only smaller molecules (ie of solvent ) to pass through, and prevents the other Large molecules (ie of solute) to pass through it .
•It helps to maintain internal state of cell irrespective of surroundings.
