BANNING SEX DETERMINATION TESTS IMPROVES THE SEX RATIO IN INDIA
Dear friends,
This is a bitter fact that in India there are communities which honor a value system based on son preference and discrimination against a girl.
In year 1991 the ratio of boys and girls was 1000: 945 which declined sharply in year 2001 i.e. 1000: 927.
In the same year, a legal code was made banning the sex determination to discourage abortion of female fetus.
Being educated we all wonder why sex determination is so prevalent in India. Usually a girl child is avoided in a patriarchal family because once they are married, they belong to their husband’s family whereas boys are the heirs of their family only.
Another reason is that usually parents are pressurized to pay heavy dowry while marrying their daughters. Many other social issues also make the girls’ position weaker and vulnerable.
In my view, banning sex determination will prevent the killing of female fetus when parents cant have the choice of gender of their child. This will certainly balance the sex ratio in our country. Balancing sex ratio will further help in making a healthy society discouraging male dominance.
Also, banning the killing of female fetus would help to prevent the mental and physical damage of a pregnant women.
Social awareness, rights of women , and government schemes are creating equal opportunities for girls. Today, the parents of the girls feel proud and honored watching their daughters go stronger.
In the end, I just want to say:
“ALL ANGELS COME FROM HEAVAN
BUT SOME NEVER MAKE IT DOWN TO EARTH”
Let’s support the cause against sex determination
