During the sultanate period, the upper strata of society were occupied by Brahmins. Women had a subservient position of women including the practice of Sati, the seclusion and purdah system. Muslim society remained divided into several ethnic and racial groups like The Turks, Iranians, Afghans and Indian Muslims. The Muslim nobles occupied high offices and very rarely the Hindu nobles were given a high position in the government. People gave several taxes like Jizya etc.

During the Sultanate period, the nobles stood at the apex of the social system. They were mostly of foreign origin. They were the most respected and privileged class in the society. They were appointed in high posts and in lieu of their services, they received jagirs. As they belonged to different nationalities like Persians, the Afghans, the Turks, the Arabs, the Abyssinians etc. they are quite hostile to each other.
