In 1929, the Bolsheviks, under the control of Stalin forced all peasants to cultivate in collective farms and the profit they got was shared. As a result, angry peasants resisted against the authorities and destroyed livestock. Between 1929 and 1931, the number of cattle fell by one-third. Those who resisted collectivization were severely punished and many were deported and exiled. Some were allowed to cultivate independently but were treated unsympathetically.
