In 1849, the region of Punjab was annexed by the British East India Company. Subsequently in 1858, the Punjab and rest of British India came under the direct rule of British monarchy. Punjab consisted of five administrative division – Delhi, Jullundur, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi.
