The Mesopotamian civilization flourished in the Euphrates River area (in modern-day Iraq, Iran, and Syria) from 4000-2500 BCE. It is known for complex drainage systems in cities like Babylon and Eshnunna, and for the earliest known clay pipe. Let us look at Ur, one of the earliest cities to have been excavated. . There were no street drains of the kind we find in contemporary Mohenjo-daro. Drains and clay pipes were instead found in the inner courtyards of the Ur houses and it is thought that house roofs sloped inwards and rainwater was channelled via the drainpipes into sumps* in the inner courtyards.
