Dr. Beaumont was a surgeon in US army. He treated the person named Alexis St. Martin who was accidently shot in the stomach that injured his ribs and stomach. After treatment there remained hole in his stomach that never filled.

Dr. Beaumont then did various experiments by using stomach of St. Martin to study the digestion in stomach. During his experiments, he used to insert food tied to string in the stomach through the hole and then study how well food was digested. He also extracted hydrocholoric acid from his stomach. He used this acid to digest bits of food in cups. This lead to the discovery that not only crushing of food by stomach muscles helps in digestion but hydrocholoric acid also helps in the digestion of food.

Answer:

  • Dr. Beaumont served as a surgeon in the United States Army.
  • He attended to Alexis St. Martin, who had been accidentally shot in the stomach and had rib and stomach injuries.
  • Following therapy, he still had a hole in his stomach that never healed.
  • Then, in order to examine stomach digestion, Dr. Beaumont conducted a number of tests utilizing St. Martin's stomach.
  • He used to analyze how effectively food was digested by inserting food that was attached to a thread into the stomach during his experiments.
  • He also drained his stomach of hydrochloric acid. He utilized this acid to digest food fragments in cups.
  • This led to the finding that food digestion is aided by both hydrochloric acid and the crushing of food by stomach muscles.
