Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the founder of the Brahmo Sabha , which engendered the Brahmo Samaj, an influential socio-religious reform movement. His influence was apparent in the fields of politics, public administration and education as well as religion.

He was also a renowned scholar of the Vedic lore and Sanskritlanguage. He was the first to give the call for Swaraj as "Indian for India" in 1876, a call later taken up by Lokmanya Tilak.
