• A liberal (to the left of center) believes that the government should regulate business, and should provide for the general welfare of the people. They believe in civil rights, and the expansion of civil rights as oppressed minorities become recognized. In contrast, a conservative believes in minimal regulation of business, and in minimal or no government benefits, and the social conservatives believe that some minorities do not deserve civil rights or equal treatment under the law.
