Stomata are composed of a pair of specialized epidermal cells referred to as guard cells (Figure 3). Stomata regulate gas exchange between the plant and environment and control of water loss by changing the size of the stomatal pore.

The stomata are tiny pores in leaves that perform many functions for plants. They are a vital part of the process of photosynthesis, through their involvement in gas exchange, and the entrance and exit of water from the plant through transpiration. The stomata operate through the use of tiny cells called guard cells.
