The word secular is mostly referred as worldly. It is not about spirituality or religion. In ancient India various types of books were written including non- religious also known as  secular literature. This type of literature is more rational and scientific in nature.

Ancient Indian secular literature is comprised of the following books:

  • Books on law - ‘Dharmasutras’, ‘Manusmriti’ .
  • Book on economics  - ‘Arthashastra’ by Kautilya ( Chanakya).
  • Biographies - ‘Harshacharita’ by Banabhatta .
  • Dramas and poems - ‘Abhijnanasakuntalam’, ‘Meghdoot’ by Kalidas a.
  • Folk tales - Panchatantra.
  • Sanskrit Grammar - by Panini .
  • Book on Yogashastra - by Patanjali .
  • Book on Philosophy- ‘Chanakya Niti’ by Chanakya .

Along with these books there were rule books. These books were regarding property, punishment for various crimes such as theft, murder.  

Some books were written to emphasis the duties of the kings, administrators as well as common people.
