Sufism was an Islamic reform movement with greater emphasis on freedom of thought, liberal ideas and tolerance. The Sufis believed that all human beings were equal and that the men were brothers. In Persia, the Sufi movement began. Some of the Sufis came to India as well. They started preaching and closing the divide between the Hindus and the Muslims and broaching their liberal ideas.

Explanation:

  • Sufism doctrine was built upon the union with God through the love of God, prayers, fasting and rituals, irrespective of the Hindu or Muslim people.  This underlined that religious development should be based upon the direct knowledge of God.
  • Although they were practicing Muslims, they distinguished themselves from Orthodox Muslims. The former had faith in inner morality and the latter faith in outside behaviour. The unification by love and devotion of the human soul with God was the core of the Sufi Saints ' teachings. The way to understand their God was to renounce earthly pleasures. They lived in solitude
  • Namaz, hajj and celibacy were not taken into account by the Sufis. Therefore, orthodox Muslims misunderstood them. Singing and dancing were known as a way to cause an ecstasy that brought one closer to knowing God.
