Answer:

Since you did not specify an author, I went with Joseph Jacob's short story "Beauty and the Beast. If, of course, this is not the version you were interested in, please re-post the question with the specific author.

In this classic version of Beauty and the Beast, a merchant asks his daughters what he may bring them from his travels; the elder two daughters ask for jewelry, but the youngest, Bella, replies that all she really wants for her papa to return safely. Upon her father's request for her to name a gift, she also asks for a rose.

On the father's return journey, he stops to cut a rose from a beautiful garden, but a horrible Beast stops him. The beast tells the father that the penalty for stealing is death, but he makes a bargain with the merchant for his youngest daughter to come and live with him instead.

The daughter dutifully joins the beast at his enchanted house where all her needs and wants are met by simply clapping and asking for the object of her desire. She and the Beast become friends over time, until one day when she finds the beast huddled in the garden. Fearing his death, Bella cries out that she loves him, and the magical spell reverses, leaving a handsome prince where once lay the horrible form of the beast. Bella and the prince are married and live happily ever after.

Explanation:

The Beast is a beast in appearance and in many of his mannerisms, but on the inside, he is actually kind. Beauty describes him in different parts of the story as very good natured, humble, obliging, and kind.

Despite his outward appearance and mannerisms, Beauty ends up seeing his inner beauty and falls in love with him. When she realizes that she is in love with him, she comments how Beast has done so much to please her in everything. And, while he may be 'ugly' and have 'so little sense,' he is instead 'kind and good.'

She ends up returning to the Beast, only to find him dying. When she proclaims her love for him and finally says yes to the question he has asked daily, the Beast and the castle suddenly transform into a handsome prince and a gorgeous castle. The fairy then appears and explains to Beauty that this is 'the reward of your judicious choice; you have preferred virtue before either wit or beauty, and deserve to find a person in whom all these qualifications are united.'

While wit and beauty can be nice in love and a marriage, it wasn't Beauty's first choice in looking for a husband. Instead, she chose Beast for his kindness and goodness, despite his lack of wit and his ugly appearance. In the end, she got everything. We see that by valuing qualities such as kindness and goodness, we are rewarded.
