Walter De La Mare:
Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was the prolific author of many volumes of poetry, short stories and novels, including one of the most enduringly popular poems in the English language, 'The Listeners'. Born in Charlton, Kent, he was educated at St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School in London.
Walter de la Mare (25 April 1873-22 June 1956) was an English novelist, short story writer, childrens author, and poet. He was born to Edward de la Mare and Sophia Browning in Kent, England in 1873. He recieved his education
from St. Pauls Cathedral in London where he also served as a choir boy until he left at age 16. He began writing in 1895 and continued to write for the rest of his life. The first story published by de la Mare was "Kistmet" (1895), which had appeared in "The Scetch" unfer the Pseudonym Walter Ramal. Walter also worked for the Anglo-American Oil Company of London in the acounting department for a total of 18 years while managing to raise and support a family. In 1908 de la Mare dedicated his life to his writing after recieving a government pension, this also allowed him to retire.
Major Works & Themes
Following the government pension de la Mare began to publish many more peices of literature including Memoirs of a Midget (1921) Songs of Childhood (1902) and The Listeners (1912). Memoirs of a Midget won Walter the James Tate Memorial Prize for Fiction. Perhaps Walters most popular peice of literature is perhaps "The Listeners", a poem that showcases one of his favorite and most popular themes, the supernatural and death. La Mare's other favorite themes included childhood, dreams, commonplace objects.
Family
Walter de la Mare was married to Elfrida (Elfie) Ingpen. They had four children; Richard Herbert Ingpen, Florence de la Mare, Colin de la Mare, and Lucy Elfrida de la Mare. He met Elfrida at the Esperanza Amatuer Dramatics club, she was the leading lady. His father was James Edward de la Mare and his mother was Sophia Browning (de la Mare.) De le Mare also had two brothers and four sisters; Edward, James, Ada Mary, Florence Mary, Constance Eliza, and Ethel who died as an infant.

The list of honors and awards that Walter de la Mare received during his lifetime - not to mention his compiling and editing of anthologies - include; Polignac Prize, Royal Society of Literature Prize, 1911; James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction, 1922, for Memoirs of a Midget; Carnegie Medal, Library Association, 1947, for Collected Stories for Children; Companion of Honour, 1948; Order of Merit, 1953; Foyle Poetry Prize, 1954; honorary degrees from several universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, St. Andrews, London, and London.
