Vitamins are the chemical materials required by the body for proper growth and development. There are six types of vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K.


1. Vitamin A: It is a fat-soluble vitamin. The chemical name of vitamin A is Retinol.

Functions: 1. Improves eyesight.

2. Stimulates appetite.

3. Keep the digestive system healthy.

4. Helps in the Growth and development of body.

Problems due to Deficiency of vitamin A: 1. Night blindness.

2. Dry skin.

3. The body becomes prone to infections.

4. The body becomes weak.

5. Weakend lungs.

Sources of Vit A: dairy products, green vegetables, egg, fish, chicken.


2. Vitamin B: vitamin B is water soluble vitamin. The chemical name of vitamin B is Thiamine.

Functions: 1. Keep the nervous system normal.

2. Energizes vital organs of the body.

3. Stimulates appetite.

4. Prevent skin diseases.

Problems due to deficiency of Vit B: 1. Hair fall.

2. Development of children stops.

3. Less appetite.

Sources: milk, butter, pulses, egg, chicken, fish, green vegetables etc.


3. Vitamin C: it is a fat-soluble vitamin. The chemical name of vitamin C is ascorbic acid.

Functions: 1. Purifies blood.

2. Strengthen the immune system.

3. Promotes Bone fracture recovery.

4. Prevents throat infections.

5. Strengthen teeth.

6. Protects from bad cold.

Problems due to deficiency of Vit C: 1. Scurvy.

2. Delayed wound recovery.

3. The bones become weak.

4. Delayed coagulation.

Sources: lemon, guava, malt, orange, pomegranate, tomato, green vegetables, carrot, spinach etc.


4. Vitamin E: it is a fat-soluble vitamin. The chemical name of vitamin E is tocopherol.

Functions: 1. increases the reproduction power.

2. Prevents infertility in women and impotence in male.

Problem due to deficiency of Vit E: 1. Skin disorders.

2. Infertility.

Sources: peas, cabbage, carrot, onion, tomato, cauliflower, honey, wheat, almond, pulses etc.
