They are known as armored protista, due to presence of hard shell or covering on the body.

They have two flagella, one longitudinal another transversal.

They are of different colours like blue, green, red, yellow and brown. Most studied one is red dinoflagellate Gonyaulax. These organisms are responsible for red tide appearance in the sea. Gonyaulax contains sexi-toxins, which have paralytic action.
