Answer

  • Oersted on the basis of his experiment with current carrying conductors observed that the electric current passing through a conducting wire produces magnetic effect.
  • He found out that electricity and magnetism are linked with each other. During a lecture in 1820, Hans Christian Oersted, a danish physicist found out that the current flowing in a straight wire caused the nearby magnetic compass needle to deflect.
  • By further investigation he came to the conclusion that the alignment of the needle is tangential to an imaginary circle which has its centre as the straight wire and plane perpendicular to the wire.
  • It was also observed that reversing the direction of the current reverses the direction of deflection of the needle.
  • The deflection increases as the curret increases or the wire is brought closer and vice versa.
  • He concluded that current or moving charges produe magnetic field in the surrounding space.

Answer:

In 1820, a Danish physicist, Hans Christian Oersted, discovered that there was a relationship between electricity and magnetism. By setting up a compass through a wire carrying an electric current, Oersted showed that moving electrons can create a magnetic field.
