martial law was imposed by General dyer because on 10th April the police station in amritsar fired upon peaceful procession and attacked bank's ,post office and hence on 13 April the infamous jallianwalla Bagh incident took place and many people were gathered together to celebrate the basakhi festival and many of were from other village who were not awared that martial law has been imposed and General dyer enters the area and block the exit and there was open fire.

Martial law was imposed in Amritsar by General Dyer when the evoked protestants attacked on banks , post offices and railway stations causing damage to British property.
And on 13 April the catastrophic Jallianwala incident took place as there are many people from outside the city were visiting Jallianwala Bagh in order to enjoy Baisakhi fest and were not aware of martial law and other were protesting against government repressive manner but Hansraj informed General Dyer about it and he killed hundreds of people.
