Explanation:
In Le Morte Darthur, Thomas Malory depicts Merlin as the most perfect counselor based on the synthesis of various characters of Merlin in precedent literature. In this text Merlin is so omnipotent that he nearly becomes the one who is able to anticipate and dominate the future, but there are also some problems exist in the relationship between Merlin and Arthur.
Merlin contributes the most to the Kingdom of Arthur. Not to mention how he makes Arthur a qualified king, if it is not because of him, Arthur won’t even exist. While supporting Arthur as the rightful king, Merlin shows his human resource by being able to not only counsel the Archbishop of Caunterbury but also having him summon all the gentlemen of armies to London by Christmas. During warfare, Merlin’s military tactic and diplomacy achieve victories one by one for Arthur. It is also amazing that during Arthur’s reign, Merlin is the only counselor. According to Louis J. Boyle in Ruled by Merlin: Mirrors for Princes, Counseling Patterns, and Malory’s ‘Tale of King Arthur’, Merlin is served as the infallible advisor that not only chancellors at 15th century should learn from, but also the princes should listen to someone like Merlin. Therefore, Merlin is no doubt the most perfect counselor who is reliable and trustworthy. However, he is too intelligent that Arthur seems to trust too much on Merlin that he does nearly 100% what Merlin instructs. It diminishes Arthur’s ability, authority, and total right as a supreme king. For example, people might think that without Merlin, Arthur is not able to be the king. What if Merlin changes his mind and decides to support other barons to become the king? In this does happen, I don’t think Arthur, as a ruler, is able to control Merlin, as a chancellor.
