This cell when exposed to light can generate and support an electric current without being attached to any external voltage source. The solar cell uses the photovoltaic effect to produce electricity. thw word “Photovoltaic” comes from the Greek word meaning “light”, and from the word “Volt”, which is the the unit of electro-motive force also the word “volt” comes from the last name of the inventor of the battery (electrochemical cell), the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta. Thus we get the term “photo-voltaic”.
