the automobile industry has been close to the center of manufacturing for nearly a hundred years. American, European, and Japanese cars of each vintage have come to symbolize the eras. What better symbol of national ingenuity and creativity is there than the automobile? Of course we all have our own preferences, and I want to share my favorite cars.
Car design has followed the characterizations of each of their eras from their beginning as a wagon with a kerosene powered horse, to the flamboyant ‘20s, to the utilitarian ‘30s and ‘40s, and then the thrill of the space age from the late ‘50s through the ‘60s. The ‘70s were tough on all design, and automobiles suffered from that as well as the oil embargoes and gas crisis that required instant downsizing and cost cutting. The ‘80s and ‘90s were marginally better and the ‘00s have seen increasingly improved design. But over time, car design has reflected the times and inspired the next. Some designs are duds, and some move us.
