The reason for the Battle of Plassey was that the servants of the company were indulged in abuse of dastaks in inland trade and not paying duty. However, the immediate reason was the conspiracy of Robert Clive with Mir Jafar. British also started the fortification of Calcutta which was opposed by the Nawab.

It was an important British East India Company victory over the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies. It let the British East India Company take control of this part of the Indian subcontinentRobert Clive bribed Mir Jafar, the commander-in-chief of the Nawab's army, and also promised him to make him Nawab of Bengal. Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah at Plassey in 1757 and captured Calcutta. The battle was preceded by an attack on British-controlled Calcutta by Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah and the Black Hole massacre.
