Answer:
The March Picnic was a long-awaited affair at Kalyani High. Every year, students would sit their exams out in March for two weeks, and the school would be a constant source of stress. During this time, the only thing to look forward to was the end-of-the-year picnic that would take place the day after writing the last test of the semester. Buses would line up to carry children to the bursting-green parks near Ranchi, flush with fountains watering wet grass and large concrete spaces to run around in. Blankets would be laid down, and baskets of food brought out. Filled-chicken sandwiches, homemade paneer wraps, jars of lemonade, rasgullas, and heaps of other delicacies spread out over the checked mats. The juniors would run off to play on the swings and statues, while the seniors gossiped and laid out napkins and trays for lunch. Papers would lay crushed and forgotten in otherwise empty backpacks as students relished in their three hours of freedom before the beginning of summer vacation. Teachers would laze around the swimming pool, adult drinks in hand, watching their children waste their time, and so enthusiastically at that. The soil on the ground would be fresh, and the breeze running through their hair would be chill, the aroma of spicy cinnamon taking over. The March Picnic was the reason Preeti was currently studying Newton’s laws of motion with as much desperation as possible. There was no way she would miss it.
