Ashoka Maurya was the last major emperor of the Mauryan dynasty in India. The Rock Edict XIII describes the war of Kalinga fought by emperor Ashoka. According to this Edict, one lakh people were killed and around fifty thousand people were captured. Therefore, the suffering that the war caused on the conquered people moved him to such regret that he renounced armed victories. And it was this during this time that he came into contact with Buddhism. After the war of Kalinga, Ashoka Maurya adopted the policy of Dhamma Vijay or the victory through peace.
