Once there was a little boy named Charlie.

Charlie loved wheelie bins. He liked them so much because they were big. So big that he could imagine another world living inside them. He thought that whenever anyone threw some rubbish in a wheelie bin, it made a new building in a city inside the bin.

Once a week before the sun had come up, Charlie sat up in bed with his teddy bear watching the garbage collector collect the rubbish from the bins. Charlie loved to see the mechanical arms that came out and picked up the bins. He also loved the big noises of the rubbish tipping into the back of the truck.

He imagined his rubbish city joining all the other rubbish cities from his neighbourhood. He thought about the skyscrapers made of cornflake boxes. The roads made of mandarin peel. The houses made of baked bean tins and egg cartons. Trees that sprouted from orange seeds. Flowers from vegetable scraps. Bridges made of watermelon skins.

The night before the garbage truck was due to come, Charlie and his dad gathered all their household rubbish into the wheelie bin. Then they wheeled the bin onto the footpath. Charlie waved goodbye to the bins and patted each of them, then went to his bedroom and thought about what the buildings in his garbage city might look like. He drew a picture of the inside of a bin with all its houses and buildings and shops. He coloured it in with bright colours.

Early the next morning, Charlie was waiting by his window. The garbage truck didn’t come. After what seemed a very long time, Charlie was sick of waiting so he ran downstairs. His dad was sitting in an armchair reading the paper. His mum was sitting on the sofa in front of the T.V. eating raisin toast. First Charlie told his mum about the garbage collector not coming but she said garbage collectors never forget. Then he told his dad. His dad thought the garbage collector could be just a little late.

So Charlie drew a picture of all the country being flooded with rubbish. He thought about the world being flooded with rubbish. What would happen if the garbage truck never came again? The rubbish cities might become whole countries!

It was late in the afternoon when Charlie heard the motor of a big truck he knew. He ran outside and watched as the garbage collector emptied the bins. When the truck had moved on, Charlie ran inside shouting, “It was probably just a change of time!”

Charlie felt very glad to see the bins being emptied after almost a day of worry about his home being flooded with rubbish. His mother hugged him and told him it was time to go upstairs and have a bath.
