Don’t Judge A Book by its Cover

“Be quiet!” Ms Wilson screamed “Just be quiet!”

Everyone was quiet. We all stared at her with surprise and a few girls were gapping her like my teacher had slapped them. Then as quickly as she had screamed at us, she apologized “I’m sorry children, Ms Wilson is sick today, please forgive me”.

I felt scared. I quickly looked down at my Winnie the Pooh picture book and pretended that the colours were really interesting. That was my first meeting with my teacher on the first day of school.

I dreaded the ringing of the bell, for it would mean that recess break was over and I would have to face that terrible old shrew. Suddenly there was the loud ringing of our bell. “Oh man” I thought. I shuddered from head to toe. Straight away I turned away from my friend’s eye because I knew he’d start giggling about my terrible teacher that everyone was telling me about. It was my first day and everyone I had met had been so nice! Everyone except my teacher.

Slowly I made my way to the classroom. I followed the other students in and took a seat right at the back. “We have a new student” came a sharp voice. “Could you please tell me your name” and with these words came a smile. At least I thought it was a smile. But I wasn’t sure. It could have been a smirk I thought to myself.

“Look” I heard Ms Wilson say “If you aren’t going to listen to me, how are we ever going to get to know each other?” I looked up and I got a shock because Ms Wilson was looking at me. I startled back. Everyone was looking at me and it was my first day too. It was so embarrassing!

“Jack is it? It’s ok, don’t be shy” she said softly. I couldn’t believe it. Was this the old the angry lady that I was so scared of? Slowly as the day went on I felt that I was wrong. After lunch Ms Wilson taught me the times tables. She even gave me new colouring pencils to do my homework with! She was the best teacher I ever had!

Going home I thought that she was pretty nice and not an old hag like everyone had told me so. I wasn’t ever going to listen to what other people say again without me seeing for myself!
