It was an extremely hot afternoon and the temperature seemed to just keep rising. I had just pulled up to the lake where I planned to dump the contents of so many treasured memories. I had been dwelling on what seemed like love for almost three months, when the relationship ended long before. -But after having lasted 4 years I still hadn't found a way to let go, thus leading me here...
Sitting in my parked car I looked over at the heart shaped box sitting next to me on the passenger seat. The lid wasn't on all the way, revealing just a small but painful view of the boxes contents. Positioning the lid back into place I tucked the box under my arm as I made my way for the river. The heat beat down on my back as the sun seeped through the red, and orange changing leaves of the trees lining the streams edge. An autumn scent filled the air as my footsteps made the familiar creaking on the old wooden bridge stretched across the waters surface. I set the box on the edge of the railing looking down into the murky water. The sun sparkled on the surface and small ripples danced here and there. I opened the box removing the contents one by one. Love letters, photos, ticket stubs, etc.. Each one more painful than the last. My hands shook as I dropped them into the river. I felt my eyes begin to water as I watched each memory go down the stream mixing in with the newly colored leaves freshly fallen. I sat there watching each treasured memory, eyes laced in emotion, until one by one they all disappeared. But even upon their absence, I knew she would always be part of my heart, for the love we shared ccould never be forgotten.
