Every end of year at school we usually have educational trips at an extra fee. Last year it so happened that my friend Asha, who actually happens to be one of the brilliant students in our class was not going to attend. She confined in me one afternoon and told me she was not going to be able to get that fee since her mother was not well and they were actually trying to fund raise money for her medical bills. I couldn't hold my tears. I felt like i could do something for Asha but i was also not doing well financially. That evening i went back home with a heavy heart. I wanted a solution for Asha. What killed me the more is the fact that that weekend of our trip was her birthday. She is the kind who never misses my birthdays. She has always been there for me from the word go. She celebrates and cries with me. She is someone i can really call a friend. I felt i should do something for her. Getting back home, i asked my brother for a loan which i could later settle but he also didn't have. I told him the reason why i needed that money was to help my best friend who was not doing well at that time get an opportunity to also attend our Geography trip. It is at that time that my brother came up with the idea of me asking my classmates to help me contribute and we raise the fee that Aha needed. Hmm..... Come to think about it, It sounded like a good idea. Next day, first thing after reaching school i called three of my other friends and shared with them the idea. They liked it. We agreed it was going to be a surprise for her. No one was to tell her. After classes, we called a few of our friends and luckily enough we were able to raise that money and even more. So, that Thursday as we were going home, i told her the good news. She gave me that bitter sweet expression. I managed to convince her and she later accepted reluctantly. That was after reminding her how good she has always been good me and i felt the need to pay back. She thanked me and the next day in class she expressed her gratitude to every one else who was able to contribute but that was not all. We had planned to surprise her for her birthday during the trip. I manged with the help of her sister to get one of her favorite pictures with her grandmother, we refurbished it and we hid it in one of the malls where we had planned to take her. We asked the painter to write her address in reverse and present it to her upon arrival and he did just that. That evening i told her we go for ice cream at that mall and when we reached he picture was presented to her. At first she was confused at what was going on, opened the picture and it looked familiar. I told her it was her picture she took with the grandmother which i decided to refurbish. She broke down and cried and thanked me for making her birthday special.
