When the light faded into a peaceful sleep, my parents start yelling at my brother, Brady, for doing graffiti at school. The blue digital clock on my bedside table flashes onto 11:00.
The yells continue. I don’t tend to feel sorry for Brady, for he is always picking on me. He started picking on me more when my two friends, Emma and Jordan left my school last year; and the worst thing is I have no idea why. But this time, my sorriness is for Brady. I would hate getting told off for something nasty; but if you don’t want to get in trouble, don’t do anything bad.
Please help me, God, I pray aloud, Brady didn’t mean to do it. It’s true. Please protect Emma, Jordan, Dime, everyone and myself. Dime’s my gray cat. We rescued her from the side of the road. And, I continue, please help Darren with his autism. Please. I breathe slowly, knowing that I pray for that every night because Darren, my little brother, always gets into because of his autism. I always say to his teacher, Mrs Canter, that he can’t help it because of his brain damage and that he was born with it.
The clock flicks onto 11:15. Why does time have to go so fast? I stare out into the coldness of the window. I push back the doona cover and jump out of bed. I walk over to the window. Dime sits on her chair that she normally sits on when mum does the washing. She “miaows” the way she does when she’s upset. I remember Sofie our Dachshund, who died the year before.
“Come here,” I whisper; picking her up. Her gray fur shimmers in the light as if it was made out of silver, that’s why we named her Dime. She “miaows” again. She lies on my lap on the windowsill until I gaze over my shoulder and see my clock says 11:18. Her leap was full of lots of energy as she jumps on my bed.
I stare at the sapphire stars. They shine onto my cold face as I decide to jump off the windowsill. I jog on the wet grass and leap onto the mossy rocks I pass. They’re kinda like stepping stones, My thoughts fly through the breeze. My eyes rest upon a hill, the moon’s rays of light shine upon the hills like a silver path. Trees sway as the smell of biscuits fill the air.
I breathe only softly. I walk up onto the hills and notice the moon is rising higher. Another “miaow” sounds and Dime comes prancing up to me. I cuddle her and notice the moon is now high up in the sky. Maybe I should go back, I think, they might be wondering where I am; except, I don’t want to leave night.
Some stars fade into darkness. I walk with Dime to my window and my eyes cross upon the clock, 12:01.
