Answer:
Last year was yet another disaster for the environment. In spite of the growing number of warnings from experts, little meaningful action has been taken to protect our world. Climate change is worsening. Temperatures are soaring. The false idol of economic growth still reigns supreme. Overpopulation continues to grow. The sixth mass extinction is gaining momentum. Wildfires are at an all-time high. The increase of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere shows no sign of slowing down. The list goes on and on, proving that almost everything is moving in the wrong direction.
In the media there is a little more talk about the environment and climate change but not very much. The business community has changed its tune but little else. It spends more money on protecting its destructive behaviour (by deceitful advertising, public relations and lobbying) than actually doing something about it. Obviously this deceit is more dangerous than open hostility to environmental action because it gives a false sense of security to the public, which is all too eager to believe that "something is being done".
The actions of Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion are positives, but their impact so far has been small. All around the world people are demonstrating about much lesser issues in far greater numbers, often at the risk of life and limb.
Another growing threat is the political trend towards conservatism. Although we are apolitical (the environment being a concern of us all), it is only logical that conservatives are the worst possible leaders in times that demand swift and drastic changes. And precisely they are gaining support. Several major countries are in the grip of climate-change deniers, who actively promote environmental destruction.
We are threatened by dangers far worse than any world war, and only a war mentality can save us. We need to set aside our petty differences and narrow self-interests and be prepared to make huge sacrifices for the future of the only planet we have. If we don’t, we are doomed.
The very first month of the year makes that ominously clear.
