THE WISE KING
Once upon time, there was a king who ruled the western part of Nepal. He was very wise. He wanted his kingdom to be prosperous. He always dreamt of connecting all the parts of his kingdom with the network of roads. For this, his subjects’ support was necessary. But he was reported that his people quarreled and fought in the name of caste and religion. This made him very upset. However, an idea to teach his people a lesson struck his mind.
The king called a meeting in his court. The attendees were the leaders representing various castes and communities. The announced, “Each group will be assigned a task of building a road. After the completion of the task, the groups will be awarded two boxes of gold coins.” All the group leaders accepted king's purpose. They were very happy with the king's announcement and said that they would start the construction of the roads from the following week.
Group leaders held the meeting of their groups and knew that they lacked the workers and their task could be incomplete. All the group leaders went to the king and informed him about the problem. The king advised them to cooperate with each other.
People were unwilling to do so because of their unnecessary enmity. The king ordered them to leave the court and start their works at once. They were in a dilemma. They were not ready to lose the gold coins easily and stretch their hands towards their rivals.
For several days they couldn’t start their works. Finally, people decided to help each other to finish the job. They understood the king’s intention. Also, they realised their mistake. All went to the king and said that they would work together to develop their homeland. Hearing this the king became very happy.
Moral: National Unity is the backbone of development.
